The term " Modoc " is derived from Lutuami muatwak, meaning ' ' soutlierner ", from muât ' ' south " -f- wah ' ' to live ", and was applied by both Modoc and Klamath to designate the Achumawi (or Pit River Indians). A good opportunity offered itself during a field trip among the Indians of northeastern California in the summer of 1926, and with this purpose in view a spécial trip was made to Beatty, in the Klamath Indian Réservation, in southeastern Oregon, where one of us hadan old friend in the person of Mac Williams.
